Wie kaum eine andere Bauaufgabe boomte der Bibliotheksbau weltweit auf bemerkenswerte Weise. Vielerorts entstanden in den letzten Jahrzehnten unzählige neue Bibliotheken, nicht nur um die überquellenden Bestände aufzufangen, sondern auch Raum für neue Aufgaben zu schaffen.

As noted, I generally agree with these criticisms. For example, since the time of original publication, we have seen the power distribution nature of most things on the Internet, including popularity and traffic. Exponential distributions will always result in overestimates using calculations based on means rather than medians. I also think that meaningful content types were both overused (more database-like records) and underused (PDF content that is now routinely indexed) in my original analysis.
However, the authors’ third criticism is patently wrong, since three different methods were used to estimate internal database record counts and the average sizes of each record they contained. …

Die Dissertation von Tim Brody ist verfügbar. Evaluating Research Impact through Open Access to Scholarly Communication.
This thesis describes the relatively recent phenomenon of open access to research literature, tools that were built to collect and analyse that literature, and the results of analyses of the effect of open access and its effect on author behaviour. It shows that articles self-archived by authors receive between 50-250% more citations, that rapid pre-printing on the Web has dramatically reduced the peak citation rate from over a year to virtually instant and how citation-impact – now widely used for evaluation – can be expanded to include a new web metric of download impact.

Der aktuellen Ausgabe von D-Lib ist folgendes zu entnehmen.
As of this issue, a combined January/February issue, we are moving to a bi-monthly publication schedule in order to help reduce costs. We plan to stay with this bi-monthly schedule through mid-year, at which point we will critically evaluate the options available to us, including the possibility of returning to a monthly publication schedule if funding permits. In the meantime, we will continue our funding efforts as well as continue to look at alternate modes of support.
OA is not for free.
