Now Darby’s only library, believed to be the country’s oldest continuously operating free public library, may close its doors and end its time as a gathering spot for this former mill town’s 10,000 residents.
The library can afford to operate the two-story brick building only through the end of the year, director Sue Borders says.
USA Today berichtet über die Darby Free Library, die womöglich nach 266 Jahren Betrieb als Öffentliche Bibliothek schließen muss. Während die aktuelle Wirtschaftskrise in den USA offensichtlich wenigstens punktuell die Nutzung und vielleicht die lokale Bedeutung öffentlicher Bibliotheken erhöht (mehr dazu auch hier), entsteht aus gleichem Anlass parallel ein Finanzierungsproblem:
Darby is in the same spot as many libraries. The tax dollars that support them are dwindling as property tax revenue declines along with home values and sales taxes fall as consumers spend less. As local funding drops, libraries are turning to their endowments and draining the investments.
