Wer in den USA wohnt, kann ab heute seinen Kindle 2 vorbestellen. Auslieferung erfolgt ab 24. Februar. Der alte darf dann ins Regal, versteht sich aber dank “Whispersync” gut mit dem neuen:

Amazon’s new “Whispersync” technology automatically syncs Kindle 2 and the original Kindle, which makes transitioning to the new Kindle 2 or using both devices easy for customers. Kindle 2 will also sync with a range of mobile devices in the future.

Es sieht ein bisschen so aus, als würde die erhoffte Einsparung von Komplexität (tausende Bücher unübersichtlich in den Regalen) ohne größere Umschweife in eine neue (mehrere Kindle verschiedener Generationen und ihre Peer Tools mit jeweils tausenden elektronischen Büchern im Speicher, die sich untereinander synchronisieren ) führen…

P.S. Und ja – man kann ihn laut Werbefilm problemlos am Strand lesen.

    Die New York Times berichtet heute ausführlich zum Thema. Dabei ergibt sich, nachdem die Frage der Technik so langsam geklärt scheint, dass die nächste Schlacht auf dem Feld der Preisgestaltung geschlagen wird:

    Amazon generally charges $9.99 for the digital versions of best sellers, although many publishers still sell the digital content to Amazon for the same price that they sell physical books. That means that for now, Amazon is taking a loss or making a small margin on the sale of some e-books.

    “We do not agree with their pricing strategy,” said Carolyn K. Reidy, chief executive of Simon & Schuster. “I don’t believe that a new book by an author should ipso facto be less expensive electronically than it is in paper format.”

    Mr. Bezos disagreed. “E-books should be cheaper than physical books. Readers are going to demand that, and they are right because there are so many supply chain efficiencies relative to printing a paper book,” he said.
