OCLC, mit schlechter Presse

Wer am Donnerstag auf dem Bibliothekartag in Mannheim in der Session der AG der Verbundsysteme war, erinnert sich vielleicht noch an die beiden Vorträge zu OCLC (“Moving the network into the library workflow”). Dort erfuhr man u.a., dass es der Anspruch OCLCs sei, ein “Google der Bibliotheken zu werden” und wenn man an die Weltkarte, mit der Berndt Dugall die Expansionsbemühungen der wuchtigen Bibliothekslenker aus Dublin (Ohio) im Generalmaßstab an die Wand malte, dann hat man wenigstens gemischte Gefühle dabei. Jeffrey Beall vielleicht sogar mehr als das, schlußfolgert er doch in einem jüngst auf E-LIS (und im Band “Radical Cataloging: Essays at the Front“) publizierten Paper:

I think more and more libraries will begin to conclude that they are not getting their money’s worth from the organization, what with the poor data quality and poor computer applications it provides, and with the way it exploits its employees and snubs the library profession.
