Greetings to everyone!
We are now just two weeks from the August 30 submission deadline for iConference
2011. This is the date on which full papers will be due, as well as poster
abstracts and alternative events proposals.
The 2011 iConference will be our sixth annual gathering of researchers and
professionals who share the goal of making a difference through the study of
people, information, and technology. The event will showcase diversity in
research interests and approaches, and demonstrate how the field creates
leadership and impact on a global scale.
The four days will include peer-reviewed papers, posters, and alternative
events. Also being organized is a Doctoral Student Colloquium (the application
deadline is November 1) and a Junior Faculty & Postdoc Colloquium. The event
will be held at Seattle’s Renaissance Hotel, locally hosted by the University of
Washington Information School. Papers and poster abstracts will be published in
the ACM Digital Library.
Authors and organizers can now submit full papers, poster abstracts, and
alternative events proposals at http://www.ischools.org/iConference11/participation/.
The link for author registration and the submission process appears under the
“Instructions for Authors” header. All submitting authors must also provide
basic information and agree to copyright parameters as a condition of acceptance
and publication.

The iConference is sponsored by the iCaucus, a growing association of over 25
Schools, Faculties, and Colleges in North America, Europe and Asia that focus on

aim is to build community and promote and share excellence in research on

We are pleased to announce that the Paper Submission date for IDCC10 has been extended by 2 weeks. The Call will now close at 1700 BST (that’s 1600 UTC, 1800 CEST, 12pm EDT, 9am PDT) on Monday 9 August 2010.
Submissions can be in the form of an abstract (maximum of 1000 words) for practice based papers or a full paper (maximum 12 pages) for research based papers.
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) will provide limited travel awards for graduate students whose papers are accepted for the conference.
Presenting at the conference offers you the chance to:-
- Share good practice, skills and knowledge transfer
- Influence and inform future digital curation policy & practice
- Test out curation resources and toolkits
- Explore collaborative possibilities and partnerships
- Engage educators and trainers with regard to developing digital curation skills for the future

The Information Interaction in Context conference ( IIiX ) explores the
relationships between and within the contexts that affect information
retrieval and information seeking, how these contexts impact
information behavior, and how knowledge of information contexts and
behaviors improves the design of interactive information systems.
The intention of IIiX is to foster an integrated approach to
information access by bringing together members of the research
communities in information seeking behavior, interactive information
retrieval, and information retrieval system design.

HCIR WORKSHOP
The 4th Annual Workshop on Human-Computer Interaction and Information
Retrieval (HCIR 2010) will be held in conjunction with IIiX 2010. HCIR
is the study of information retrieval (IR) techniques that bring human
intelligence into the search process. It combines research from the
fields of human-computer interaction (HCI) and IR, placing an emphasis

Die Veranstaltung findet vom 7. bis 9. Oktober 2010 auf der Frankfurter Buchmesse statt. Der Best Paper Award richtet sich an Young Information Professionals, die sich thematisch mit Themen wie Semantic Web, Linked (Open) Data und der Zukunft von Informationsinfrastrukturen beschäftigen und ist mit einem Preisgeld von u.a. € 500 für den ersten Platz dotiert. Den CfP für den Best Paper Award und die DGI-Konferenz gibt es auf den Webseiten der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Informationswissenschaft und -praxis (DGI).

This satellite conference will be held immediately prior to the World Library and Information Congress in Gothenburg, Sweden, August 2010. The IFLA New Professionals Special Interest Group and the Management of Library Associations Section invite proposals for presentations. First time presenters and new professionals are encouraged to apply.
In order to meet publication deadlines (for inclusion on the IFLA website) proposals must be submitted by February 10, 2010.
Conference Themes and Focus
New librarians are positioning themselves as library leaders in academia, libraries, and professional associations. This event aims to address key themes and leading trends to provide library services while changing attitudes and expectations on the way. The conference organising committee wishes to showcase examples of best practice in how to develop new leaders, services, and inclusion of new professionals in decision-making processes through both research based scholarly presentations and experiential and practical stories of successes and lessons learned. The organisers are particularly interested in receiving proposals for presentations on any of the following, or related, key themes and issues :
- How to internationalize careers
- New librarian paradigm
- Mobile librarian
- Real-time librarian
- Advocating for library associations to include new professionals in their agenda

Maxi Auch in diesem Jahr gibt es ein ermäßigtes Angebot für Studierende (explizit auch Studierende anderer Hochschulen, auch wenn es im angehängten Angebot anders zu lesen ist), die am PreConference Day (18. Januar 2010 im NH Hotel in Berlin Mitte) der Academic Publishing in Europe 2010 (APE 2010) teilnehmen wollen. Der Tag steht unter dem Thema “Information Competence” und ist mit verschiedenen Workshops und einem erstklassigen Mittagessen gefüllt. Der PreConference Day ist eine sehr lohnenswerte Veranstaltung – sowohl inhaltlich als auch in Bezug auf die Möglichkeiten interessante Kontakte zu knüpfen. Stephen Wolfram, founder & CEO of Wolfram Research, creator of Mathematica and Wolfram|Alpha, and Marti Hearst, a professor at UC Berkeley currently working in the Obama administration, are the keynote speakers for the fifth annual iConference, which will be held at the
iHotel and Conference Center at the University of Illinois
Urbana-Champaign, on Feb. 3-6, 2010. The iConference is sponsored by the iSchools, a growing number of leading information schools across the globe who have joined together to build awareness of, support for, and
involvement with the information field. The theme of this year’s conference is “Impacts,” particularly concerning the Obama Administration’s commitment to promoting open government and citizen participation.
Hearst, a professor in the School of Information at the University of California, Berkeley, will discuss how information technology is playing a new central role in the governing of the United States. Additional sessions throughout the conference will focus on international
perspectives on information, its management and application, public access, social networking, health informatics, and community engagement.
Wolfram is scheduled to speak at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, in the Chancellor Ballroom at the iHotel. Hearst speaks at 10:30 am Friday, Feb. 5. Both plenaries are free and open to the public.
Early registration ends Friday, January 15. Registration costs are $300 regular attendee/$100 students. After that date, regular registration is $375 regular attendee/$125 students. An awards banquet will be held on
Friday, Feb. 5. The cost is $50 regular attendee/$10 student.

Elke Das IFLA-Nationalkomitee schreibt gemeinsam mit BI-International insgesamt vier Stipendien aus, die werdenden Beschäftigten (Studierenden, Auszubildenden, Berufseinsteigern) im Bibliotheksbereich die Teilnahme an dem IFLA-Kongress 2010 in Göteborg, Schweden, ermöglichen sollen. Voraussetzung ist die Mitarbeit bei der Übersetzung ins Deutsche des IFLA-Express. Bewerbungsfrist ist der 31.Dezember 2009. Weitere Informationen gibt es auf den Seiten des Bibliotheksportals.

We welcome original papers from graduate students on the theme of information access and all its aspects as related to archives, libraries, museums and information systems. This broad area of inquiry considers the implications of the organization, communication and ownership of information, and combines the realms of policy, theory and practice. This conference provides students with the opportunity to present and discuss their work with peers, scholarly researchers and information professionals and practitioners. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of this topic, we encourage participation from students working on issues related to information access based in all fields of study. The committee will communicate their decisions to prospective presenters by January 26, 2010.

Elke Mit diesem Motto werben die Macher der OPALescence 2009: An Online Library Conference for Everyone Home. Von zu Hause aus zuschalten und aktiv bei einer reinen Onlinekonferenz teilhaben. Das Programm ist auf jeden Fall vielversprechend.
Wer sich konkreter für OPACs interessiert, für den lohnt sich möglicherweise auch eine Teilnahme am Webinar von OCLC mit Karen Kalhoun als Referentin. Karen wird den neuen Report “Online Catalogs: What Users and Librarians Want” vorstellen.

Elke Heute wurde bekannt gegeben, dass die IFLA 2010 nicht wie geplant in Brisbane, sondern in Göteborg stattfinden wird. Als Grund wird die Finanzkrise und mangelne Unterstützung seitens der Regierung angegeben:
With the uncertainty around the world economic crisis combined with very limited opportunity for government and local financial support the Governing Board has agreed that it cannot risk a potential significant financial loss for IFLA. Ben Wenn eines Tages das gesamte Wissen der Menschheit im Internet zu finden ist, wird man keine Bibliotheken mehr brauchen. Diese werden dann nur noch “Bucharchive” mit den entsprechenden Unikaten sein. Die Bibliothekare sollten sich darauf vorbereiten.
meint ein Leserkommentator namens Nachdenk [sic!] in der Internetausgabe des Münchner Merkurs zur dpa-Meldung zum Bibliothekartag und verdeutlicht, dass noch nicht jeder Nachdenkliche über Sinn und Zweck von Bibliotheken ausreichend informiert ist. In der Tat zeichnet der Nachrichtentext ein etwas einseitiges Bild, denn er vermittelt von der Überschrift bis zum obligaten Google-Verweis, dass es Bibliotheken hauptsächlich darum geht, digitale Dienstleistungen anzubieten. Gerade aber in öffentlichen Bibliotheken ist dies nur eine – oft berechtigterweise kleine – Facette der Bibliotheksarbeit.
Die unterschiedlichen Betriebsmodelle seien derzeit ein großes Problem für die Nutzer. “Die analoge Welt einfach auf die virtuelle zu übertragen, das funktioniert nicht“, sagte die Vorsitzende des Berufsverbandes Information Bibliothek, Susanne Riedel.
Ich fürchte, das große Problem besteht eher für die Einrichtungen, die gerade mit solch eigenwilligen Produkten wie der Onleihe genau diese Übertragung versuchen. Bibliotheken arbeiten im Idealfall nah am Bedarf der Nutzer und wo sie ihn beispielsweise aufgrund von Rahmenbedingungen (Darmstadt-Urteil) nicht komplett bedienen können, klären sie ihn über die Gründe auf und bieten Alternativen an. Es ist also in gewissem Umfang Aufgabe der Bibliotheken, die Lücke zwischen analog und digital und die Probleme damit zu überbrücken, in dem sie neben den Inhalten das vermitteln, was man gemeinhin Informationskompetenz nennt. Dann sollte die Frage analog oder digital auch kein großes Problem mehr für die Nutzer aufwerfen. Die mögen ohnehin oft einfach beides.

die IBI-Alumni-Initiative veranstaltet auf dem Bibliothekartag in Erfurt 2009 am Mittwoch, den 3. Juni, von 16 bis 18 Uhr einen kleinen Empfang am Gemeinschaftsstand der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Halle 2, Standnummer 2-532). Alle Ehemaligen und Freunde des IBI sind dazu herzlich eingeladen.
Für alle diejenigen, die entweder nicht in Erfurt beim Bibliothekartag dabei sein können oder die sich einfach gerne ein paar Impressionen von unserem HU-Stand (bestehend aus Computer- und Medienservice, dem Institut für Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft und der Universitätsbibliothek) anschauen möchten, gibt es bereits jetzt schon einen Fotostream über den Link http://www.flickr.com/photos/bibliothekartag2009/. Ab Dienstag finden sich bei Flickr dann auch mehr Bilder als nur unser “Startfoto” des Schriftzugs der HU.
Dabei lüften wir zum Beispiel das Geheimnis, was genau an unserem Stand durch Studierende des Instituts für Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft in monatelanger Kleinarbeit gebaut wurde und welche Überraschungen dabei auf die Standbesucher warten! Maxi Neben der Einladung zur gesamten diesjährigen DGI-Online-Tagung (15.10.-17.10.09) richtet sich der folgende Call for Participation insbesondere an den Nachwuchs aus dem Bibliotheks- und Informationsbereich:
Informationskompetenz ist d i e zentrale Schlüsselkompetenz der sogenannten Informations- und Wissensgesellschaft. Das bringt all jene in eine vorteilhafte Position, die bereits entsprechende Kompetenzen und Qualifikationen ihr eigen nennen (können). Dazu gehören zweifellos die Absolventen informationswissenschaftlicher Ausbildungsberufe und Studiengänge. Ihnen steht die (Informations-)Zukunft weit offen; sie müssen nur zeigen, was sie können. Dazu wird ihnen jetzt Gelegenheit geboten.
