2nd Annual University of Toronto ischool Student Conference

Information Access: Commons, Control, Controversy (IAC3)
March 19-20, 2010

We welcome original papers from graduate students on the theme of information access and all its aspects as related to archives, libraries, museums and information systems. This broad area of inquiry considers the implications of the organization, communication and ownership of information, and combines the realms of policy, theory and practice. This conference provides students with the opportunity to present and discuss their work with peers, scholarly researchers and information professionals and practitioners. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of this topic, we encourage participation from students working on issues related to information access based in all fields of study. Possible topics include:

bibliographic access * accessibility * the access gap * universal access and information poverty * cognitive access * freedom of information/right to privacy* curation as the facilitation of access * government information * copyright/left * open content controversies* too much access? * natural language /controlled vocabulary * unauthorized access * telecommunication access * the archive: read only access * the internet as library * museums: access on display?* free access to law movement * open source software * consolidation and non competitive practices in media and the publishing industry * equity of access and the library bill of rights * unequal access: race, class, gender and information

Submission Guidelines:

Presentations made at IAC3 will be 15 minutes long. Please submit a 200-300 word abstract including the following information: paper title, name of presenter, institutional affiliation, telephone number, e-mail address, and a short bio. Submissions should indicate whether specific equipment is required. Last date for submission of abstracts is December 21, 2009. The committee will communicate their decisions to prospective presenters by January 26, 2010.

Aufbau einer Informationsinfrastruktur zum Urheberrecht für Bildung und Wissenschaft

Die DFG hat dieses Projekt “in vollem Umfang” angenommen und finanziert. Rainer Kuhlen und ich sind die Projektleiter.

Update: Zusammenfassung

Zur Unterstützung der wissenschaftlichen Gemeinschaften in Deutschland soll eine Informationsinfrastruktur zum urheberrechtlichen Wissen für Bildung und Wissenschaft (urhWiss) aufgebaut werden. Sie soll den in Bildung und Wissenschaft als Produzenten und Nutzern von Wissen Arbeitenden bzw. den ihnen zugeordneten Organisationen umfassende Informationen zu den urheberrechtlichen Problemen beim Umgang mit Wissen und Informationen aufbereiten und bereitstellen. urhWiss wird sich entsprechend getroffener Vereinbarungen mit anderen einschlägigen Initiativen und Projekten, z.B. aus dem Open-Access-Umfeld, und mit wissenschaftlichen und wissenschaftspolitischen Experten aus dem Urheberrechtsumfeld vernetzen. urhWiss selber soll aus mehreren Komponenten bestehen: Urheberrechtliches Web-Portal für Bildung und Wissenschaft, semantisch organisierter Dokumentserver, virtuelles hypertextuelles Netzwerk zu Ressourcen bestehender urheberrechtsrelevanter Organisationen, Netzwerk von Urheberrechtsexperten, FAQ zu Themen des für Bildung und Wissenschaft einschlägigen Urheberrechts, Autorenwerkzeug zum Einbringen und Verknüpfen zentraler Argumente, kommunikative/soziale Dienste zum kollaborativen Arbeiten der beteiligten Akteure. Im Vorhaben sollen Modelle für die Finanzierung der Informationsinfrastruktur nach Ablauf der Förderung erarbeitet und Netzwerke zu potenziellen finanziellen Unterstützern aufgebaut werden.

Jenny Oltersdorf und Matthias Harbeck haben je den 3. Preis des VFI-Förderungspreises 2008 gewonnen.

VFI-Preis 2007 geht an Elke Greifeneder

Die Magisterarbeit unserer Absolventin – inzwischen wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin des Instituts im Lehrstuhl Digitale Bibliothek – wurde mit dem VFI Förderungspreis 2007 ausgezeichnet. Der Verein zur Förderung der Informationswissenschaft verlieh ihr den Anerkennungspreis für ihre Arbeit über Online-Hilfen in UB-OPACs, ” in der ein bislang nur selten behandeltes Thema, das aber von hoher Relevanz für die praktische Bibliotheksarbeit ist, in überzeugender Weise analysiert und kommentiert wird; die Verfasserin hat damit eine Übersichtsarbeit von herausragender Qualität vorgelegt.”

Since the release of the Librarian Action Figure modeled in her likeness, Nancy Pearl has become a “rock star among readers” and the tastemaker people turn to when deciding what to read next. She regularly reviews books for local and national publications and does weekly book reviews on National Public Radio. Readers can’t get enough of her recommendations while bookstores and libraries offer standing room only whenever she visits. The former director of the Washington Center for the Book at Seattle Public Library, Nancy Pearl has spent a lifetime promoting books and reading. She is also the mastermind behind the ‘One City One Book’ phenomenon that has spread throughout the United States and abroad.

In interviews, Nancy Pearl has criticized the fact that nowadays all the attention goes to technology and the important role it plays in libraries. She says, “If you kept track of the number of times a librarian is asked how to build a website versus how many times they’re asked to recommend a good hook, you’d find that many more people ask the latter than the former.”

Wie viele Bibliothekare haben die American Library Association Tagung besucht?

Laut der ALA Press Mitteilung gab es bei der Tagung in Washington, DC. 28.635 Teilnehmer. Die zweit grösste Tagung fand 2005 in Chicago mit 27.962 Teilnehmer statt. Für weitere Informationen:

“Bibliographer” als Titel (Humor)

Ein “Bibliographer” ist so etwas wie ein Fachreferent, aber die genaue Bedeutung für den Titel wurde zu einem Gesprächsthema in der amerikanischen Emailliste “Germane”. Herausforderung: Digitale Langzeitarchivierung

Ich bin daran gewöhnt, Berichte aus meinen Tagungen an den Studierenden in meinen Lehrveranstaltungen zu schicken. Wenn jemand den Bericht lesen möchte, der nicht mit mir studiert, lassen Sie mich Bescheid wissen. Ich stecke ihn nicht einfach im Weblog, weil er nicht für die Welt gemeint ist, sondern für uns am Institut.

Schießerei an Virginia Tech

Einige von uns kennen Kollegen an Virginia Tech, Prof. Edward Fox, zum Beispiel, der Gründer von den Electronic Theses and Dissertations. Zum Glück ist er (und seine Studierende und Mitarbeiter) nicht getroffen. Die Tochter von einem Kollege meiner Frau ist jedoch gestorben. Die akademische Welt ist eigentlich sehr klein.

Im Namen des Instituts habe ich unser Beileid an Virginia Tech geschickt.
